If you’re a When Calls the Heart fan, otherwise known as a “hearty,” you have probably had tears when you watched the season five finale.  Jack died.  Jack– the committed constable who radiated inner strength, but still had heart and a strong moral compass.  Jack– the mountie who ticked off Elizabeth Thatcher, and then captured her heart.  Jack– one half of the show’s major relationships.

I don’t know about you, but I was heartbroken, angry, and frustrated.

The show even had a Facebook Live special the night after the finale to explain what happened, because it was such an enormous hit to hearties everywhere.  On the live special, When Calls the Heart’s executive producer sat down and talked with Lori Loughlin, Erin Krakow, Daniel Lissing, and the hearties about what happened, and why they decided to kill off one of our favorite characters.

Well, it turns out that Daniel Lissing’s contract was up and he decided to quit playing Jack on the Hallmark original TV show.  He said it was for reason’s that were very personal to him.  The others said they supported him in those decisions and would still be right there for him.

They said it was a tough decision deciding what to do about Jack’s character and thought of many situations.  However, when it came down to it, they had to be true to the characters and the show, so they killed him.  Given the strong chemistry between Lissing and Krakow, they knew they couldn’t replace him with another actor.  Given he wasn’t coming back, they couldn’t keep sending him off to the North.  They also knew Jack would never break up with Elizabeth.  Therefore, they decided Jack had to die.  It was a hard decision, but one that was best for the situation, no matter how heartbreaking it was for everyone.

I wish Daniel Lissing the best in his new endeavors.  I understand why Jack had to be killed off When Calls the Heart, but I am heartbroken.
